We have taken interviews with 529 homeless veterans in a little over 3 years of our existence. Being advocates for many we have secured benefit claims for 70, and for many more have brought them into the VA system to receive health care and enroll them in programs offered at the VA
Once a week, Veterans for Peace, conducts an early morning search of the overnight sleeping spots of the homeless looking for veterans. The team seeks out and contacts homeless veterans at temporary camps which may be located in more isolated areas of the Milwaukee metropolitan area and some sites literally under the feet of the people of Milwaukee.
Filing claims for benifits and staying with the veteran to help them through the process is something we have done from the start. Being there for them has through the years built a reputation for us of an organization that can be trusted to help.

Many veterans have small fixed incomes and are living on the edge of homelessness. If one thing happens to upset the financial balance they become homeless. Veterans for Peace have become widely known in Milwaukee's veteran community for being able to help a veteran who is in such a situation. The food program is one way that we help ease the financial strain on a veteran.
This program started with the idea that we would furnish the veterans living in our veteran houses a good variety of quality food. By providing a weekly box of good quality food we help the veteran in several ways. Homeless and low income veterans have less access to good healthy food and as a result they develop more health issues than someone who eats a larger variety of healthier food. A good diet would help get the veterans healthier and then keep them healthier.
Veterans for Peace partnered with St. John's Lutheran Church and now operates the only Veteran Food Pantry in the state of Wisconsin. Located just a block from the VA hospital, we get food to over 150 veteran households every week. This food pantry is unique with its welcoming atmosphere and goal to provide fresh healthy food.
Also once a week a breakfast meal is served at the location for Veterans, seniors and neighborhood residents.
In this land of plenty no one should go hungry.

We are recognized by the counselors and case workers at the VA as a resource for the veterans as they then leave the programs and are able to get their first apartments and rooms. Through donations from groups such as The Milwaukee North Sunrise Rotary Club and business's such as Steinhafels Furniture and many private individuals, we furnish the veterans apartments and enroll them at our Veterans Food Pantry which we operate in St John's Lutheran Church 5500 W. Greenfield Ave.
